Where National Siblings Day comes from

The day was founded by Claudia Evart of New York, who lost both her sister and her brother in separate accidents. Out of that grief she created a day to celebrate the sibling bond while there is still time to cherish it, choosing 10 April in memory of her late sister Lisette's birthday. She established the Siblings Day Foundation in 1995, and the day has since been recognised by governors across many US states. Its origins give it a quiet depth: it began as a way to honour siblings who were gone, and became a reminder to treasure the ones who are here.

A day to keep the family's stories together

Siblings hold a family's memory between them, but they hold it in pieces. One remembers the house on the corner, another remembers what a parent said the night before a big decision, a third remembers a grandparent nobody else was old enough to know.
