Father's Day is the youngest of the three days. It was the idea of Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, who wanted a day to honour her father, a veteran who had raised six children on his own. The first Father's Day was held there on 19 June 1910. It took far longer than Mother's Day to catch on, and only in 1972 did President Richard Nixon make it a permanent national holiday in the US, on the third Sunday of June. The UK adopted the same date, which is why, unlike Mother's Day, the two countries share it.
