When is Mother's Day in the UK in 2027?

In the UK, Mother's Day is properly called Mothering Sunday. It falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, three weeks before Easter Sunday, which is why the date shifts each year. In 2027 it is Sunday 7 March 2027.

When is Mother's Day in the US in 2027?

In the United States, Mother's Day is simpler to remember. It is always the second Sunday of May, which makes it Sunday 9 May 2027.

US Mother's Day moves only slightly each year because it is always the second Sunday of May. UK Mothering Sunday is tied to Easter, so it jumps around far more. Here are both, side by side, so you can plan ahead whichever one applies to your family.

Why the UK and US celebrate Mother's Day on different days

The two days have separate roots. The UK date is the older of the two. Mothering Sunday began as a Christian observance on the fourth Sunday of Lent, when people would return to their mother church, the main church of the area, for a special service. By the seventeenth century it had also become a rare day when domestic servants were given time off to travel home and see their families, which is how it grew into a day for mothers. Because it is fixed to Lent, it moves with Easter every year.

The US holiday is more recent and secular. It was created by Anna Jarvis, who held the first Mother's Day service in 1908 in Grafton, West Virginia, to honour her late mother. It spread quickly, and in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson made it a national holiday on the second Sunday of May. Jarvis later came to resent how commercial it had become and campaigned against the very industry that had grown up around it. The two dates have stayed separate ever since, which is why a family split across the Atlantic marks Mother's Day almost two months apart.
